Microsoft Access Reports and Dot Matrix Printers

This page last updated 2008-01-21.

Dot matrix printers are a pain because you have to setup custom paper sizes on the printer server (which might be parallel port attached to a work station or to a file server) .  And whenever the client changes the workstation or the server these have to be recreated.

Setting up custom paper sizes is totally different in the Windows NT 4, Windows 2000, Windows XP Home or Professional or Windows 2003 server environment compared to Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows ME.

On the print server Start >> Settings >> Printers If Windows XP or Windows 2003 Server Start >> Printers and Faxes  You should now have the list of printers.   Click on File >> Server Properties.  Now you can create a new form with the sizes you want on it as well as a name.

Then you can follow the below steps to choose the just created Paper Size. Within Access go into the design of the report, Click 'File', 'Page Setup', Click the 'Page' tab., Select 'Specific Printer',, Pick the printer you are using., Click 'Properties' then the 'Paper' tab., In 'Paper Size' select 'Custom'. and choose your just created Paper Size.
